Beyond the Altar: Building a Sustainable Love

Emily Luk

CPA, CFA - CEO and Cofounder of Plenty

The Wedding Industry is a $100bn global market, but what happens when the confetti settles?

Co-founder and CEO of Plenty Emily Luk talks to Laura Cannon, a serial entrepreneur and Certified Professional Wedding Officiant with two decades of experience, about how to navigate the complexities of marriage and build a long-lasting, fulfilling relationship.

Forget the Wedding, Focus on the Marriage

Cannon, the founder of Ceremony Officiants, DC Elopements, and Online Marriage, has officiated over a thousand weddings, including Luk's. Her experience has provided invaluable insights into the realities of modern love, and she emphasizes a crucial distinction: "Preparing for a wedding is not the same thing as preparing for a marriage."

While the wedding industry thrives on creating beautiful celebrations, Cannon believes couples should invest equal energy in establishing a solid foundation for their lifelong partnership. "It’s easy to get swept up in the details of the big day, but we need to spend that same effort preparing for what our relationship will look like, for creating this solid foundation," she explains.

Communication: The Cornerstone of a Lasting Partnership

Cannon identifies communication as the key ingredient for a successful marriage. It's not just about discussing wedding details, but also about navigating the inevitable ups and downs that life throws at couples. "We're always going to have challenging times and easier times, and the thing that can help ease our lives is having a partner we can communicate well with," she says.

Recognizing the importance of proactive communication, Cannon recommends couples set aside dedicated time for "temperature checks" and "money meetings." These structured conversations foster open communication, allow couples to stay on the same page, and prevent small issues from escalating into major conflicts.

Premarital Coaching: A Wise Investment

Cannon, who refers to her work with couples as premarital coaching, emphasizes that seeking expert guidance doesn’t signify a failing relationship. "Just like a sports team hires a coach, you can invest in coaching to improve your skills as a couple," she says.

While traditional premarital counseling often had a religious component, Cannon and other professionals are now offering secular coaching services, including online options through platforms like Ours, that provide a more personalized and accessible approach.

Navigating Difficult Conversations with the Three-Step Dialogue

For difficult conversations, Cannon recommends a three-step dialogue process:

  1. Sending and Mirroring Information: The sender shares their feelings objectively, focusing on their own experience, while the receiver listens without interrupting and mirrors back what they heard.

  2. Validating Feelings: The receiver acknowledges and empathizes with the sender's feelings, demonstrating understanding without needing to agree.

  3. Empathy: The receiver identifies and validates the sender's emotions, ensuring they feel heard and understood.

This structured approach helps shift the conversation away from blame and defensiveness, fostering a sense of collaboration and understanding.

The Four Rs of Relationship Success

To create a robust foundation for their partnership, Cannon encourages couples to discuss the "Four Rs":

  1. Relationship Boundaries: Establishing clear boundaries regarding monogamy, parenting, or other relationship agreements.

  2. Roles: Defining roles within the household, including responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and managing finances.

  3. Responsibilities: Identifying shared responsibilities like child rearing, decision-making, and managing debt.

  4. Resources: Discussing how to manage finances, time, and other resources, ensuring both partners feel valued and respected.

These conversations can address potential conflicts before they arise, setting the stage for a more harmonious partnership.

Prenups: Not a Sign of Distrust, but of Love

Cannon challenges the stigma surrounding prenuptial agreements, advocating for them as a demonstration of love and respect for both partners. "When you are most in love, it’s the best time to have these conversations and ensure your financial interests are protected,” she explains.

She acknowledges the emotional component of prenuptial agreements, recognizing that they can sometimes be perceived as a sign of distrust. However, she emphasizes that they are ultimately a means of ensuring financial security and transparency within the partnership.

The Power of Mindfulness in Marriage

Drawing on her expertise as a meditation teacher, Cannon highlights the importance of mindfulness in fostering connection and navigating challenges within marriage. She emphasizes that practicing mindfulness, even for a few minutes a day, can help couples stay present in the moment, appreciate each other, and navigate conflict with more compassion.

Beyond the Ceremony, A Lasting Partnership

Cannon emphasizes that the journey of marriage extends far beyond the wedding day. It's about continuous communication, navigating change, and fostering a strong foundation built on shared values, respect, and understanding. By investing in these fundamental elements, couples can build a lasting, fulfilling partnership, creating a love story that goes well beyond the altar.
